Course of Study In addition to the requirements listed below, students are reminded that all majors must demonstrate competency in oral and written communication.

Students who major in English are encouraged, if they wish, to minor in an area outside the discipline. Minors of particular interest may be taken, for example, in communications (for those interested in journalism or public relations), gender studies, history and political science (for those interested in law school), business (for those interested in management), theatre, biology (for those interested in medical school), or science (for those interested in technical writing). Other minors are possible, or a student may take elective courses in a variety of disciplines.

English majors have the option of completing a concentration in Creative Writing. English majors with a Creating Writing concentration would take

Liberal Education Requirements

Brenau University and its faculty are dedicated to the goal of providing students with a thorough background in the liberal arts, as well as academic and professional skills which will help them become enlightened and productive members of society. To that end, the faculty have developed a liberal education curriculum based on expectations and learning outcomes.

This liberal education curriculum is divided into four learning portals: World Understanding, Scientific and Analytic Curiosity, Artistic and Creative Imagination, and Communication and Language Fluency.

Courses applied in one portal may not be applied in another portal. However, courses applied in the Liberal Education may be applied toward a students major or minor.

World Understanding Learning Portal

Historical Perspective

Demonstrate knowledge of major events and movements in history and use this knowledge to generate a more sophisticated understanding of current events.

Global and Civic Perspective

Demonstrate a global and civic perspective by applying ethical and social justice principles in decision making.

Demonstrate quantitative reasoning through numeric, symbolic, or geometric means.

Appraise one’s health status and implement a plan for health and fitness.

Women’s College students must have one hour of Lifetime Fitness (LF) or Leisure Sports (LS) or Dance (DA); one hour of Women’s Health (WH); and one hour of any P.E. (LS/LF/DA/or WH).
Evening and Weekend or Online students may transfer in the above or take HS 105 (3 hours) while at Brenau
Nursing and Dance majors have specific Lifetime Fitness requirements. Please see those major sections for information.

Women’s College Students must have six hours of a new modern language (not studied in high school) -or- three hours of a continued modern language through the 201 level -or- three hours of an applied modern language. Please see the placement information section for specific guidelines.
Evening and Weekend Studies and Online Studies students must have three hours of modern language at any level.
International Students will exempt the Moder Language requirement with a TOEFL score of 500 or above.

Communication and Langauge Fluency Portal Elective - 3 hours

Choose from any course in the Communication and Language Fluency portal not already applied in the Liberal Education or choose from the courses below.

Note: Women’s College students may apply a 100 level language as a portal elective only for a language not used to meet the liberal education Modern Language requirement. Evening and Weekend and Online Studies students may use a 100 level language to satisfy the portal elective requirement.

English Major Requirements

Must earn a grade of “C” or better in all major classes. See the program plan for courses that can be used for both liberal education and the major. A minimum of seven (7) courses applied toward the English major must be at the upper-division (300-400) level.

Total Required Hours

A minimum of 120 hours is required to graduate with this major. It is possible that the student may graduate with more than 120 hours based on placement and transfer credit.
