Basic concepts in biochemistry, microbiology and pharmacology are introduced. The biochemistry section introduces basic concepts including protein structure, enzymes, nucleic acids, metabolic pathways and metabolism. The medical microbiology section introduces basic concepts of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses and animal parasites in relation to human disease with an emphasis on pathogenesis, mechanisms of virulence, epidemiology, therapy and prevention. The pharmacology section introduces basic concepts in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. It also covers basic concepts in pharamacokinetics.
