Middle Grades Education (M.A.T.)


The M.A.T. in Middle Grades Education is an initial certification program designed for candidates who have completed a baccalaureate degree. The completion of the requirements for the Middle Grades M.A.T. will result in certification for grades 4-8. In addition to all the course requirements, students must pass the Teaching Field Content Exams for academic content area (GACE) prior to receiving their degree.

Reading and Writing


Clinical Experience


A total of 12 hours of clinical experience is required - three hours of field experience and nine hours of student teaching or internship.

Must have one hour of field experience in each of the following grade levels: 8, (6-7), and (4-5). Each field experience must be at a different catalog number level (667/668/669.) Students enroll for 1 semester hour of field experience each semester for a combined total of 3 semester hours.

Nine hours of student teaching or internship required. Choose from student teaching sequence for one semester or the internship experience over several semesters.

Concentration Requirements


The major in middle grades education has two areas of content concentration with up to 16 semester hours of content from each of the two disciplines. The primary and secondary concentrations may be selected from language arts, mathematics, reading, science or social studies. Students may not choose Language Arts and Reading.

 One of the science electives must be a four semester hour lab science.

  • Earth and Space Science Credits / Units: 3-4

  • Physical Science Credits / Units: 3-4

  • Life Science Elective Credits / Units: 3-4

  • Science Elective Credits / Units: 3-4

Social Studies (15 hours)


Capstone Experience


If student chooses the comprehensive examination (ED 780) for the capstone experience, note that the student’s portfolio is a component of ED 780 and must be complete prior to receiving passing credit for ED 780.

Total Semester Hours Required for Degree: 62 - 74

The difference in hours is dependent on which concentrations and capstone experience the student chooses.
