Early Childhood Education (M.A.T.)


The M.A.T. in Early Childhood Education is an initial certification program designed for candidates who have completed a baccalaureate degree. In addition to all the course requirements, students must pass the Teaching Field Content Exams for academic content area (GACE) prior to placement with a school system to student teach. Education majors must earn a grade of “C” or better in all ED/SE courses prior to placement with a school system to student teach.

Program Prerequisites


Clinical Experience


A total of 12 hours of clinical experience is required: three hours of field experience and nine hours of student teaching or internship.

Must have one hour of field experience in each of the following grade levels: P-K, (1-3) and (4-5). Each field experience must be at a different catalog number level (655/656/657). Students enroll for 1 semester hour of field experience each semester for a combined total of 3 semester hours.

Nine hours of student teaching or internship required. Choose from student teaching sequence for one semester or the internship experience over several semesters.
 

Capstone Experience


If student chooses the comprehensive examination (ED 780) for the capstone experience, note that the student’s portfolio is a component of ED 780 and must be complete prior to receiving passing credit for ED 780.

Total Semester Hours Required for Degree: 55 - 57

The difference in hours is dependent on which capstone experience the student chooses.
