The Intensive English Program (IEP) provides an interactive, supportive and culturally aware education that prepares students to enroll at Brenau University, and/or build the skills they need to thrive in the English-speaking world. Students meet in person for 4-5 hours a day, five days a week, to quickly grow their language fluency, and learn in small, interactive classes led by credentialed instructors. Students receive the language and academic skills they need through a research-based and field-tested curriculum, as well as prepare to take and pass an English proficiency test for admission to Brenau’s Undergraduate or Graduate Programs.
Program Description
The Brenau Intensive English Program consists of three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each level consists of 3 classes focusing on Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking, and Grammar in Communication. Each level takes one semester to complete; therefore, the time spent in the program is dependent upon the initial placement of the student’s incoming proficiency. A fully enrolled student will take all of the classes per level before moving on to the next level. Progression to the next level will be determined by having an overall weighted score between the three classes that is equal to or above 80%. A student who enters at the Beginning level and passes all courses would be able to complete the program in 3 semesters, or 1 calendar year. Instruction consists of 22 hours a week in the classroom, and therefore qualifies students to attend the IEP on an F-1 student visa.
Program Admittance
To be admitted to the IEP, applicants must meet the following criteria: be at least 17 years of age, be available and willing to attend all classes and complete all assignments, have a minimum of a high school education, and provide official college or university transcripts, if applicable. Students will undergo a language level placement test, as well as an interview with the director, to determine appropriate class placement.
Program Completion
To complete the IEP successfully, students must earn an 80% cumulative grade for the Advanced level (including Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, and Grammar). For admission to the university, students must pass a university-approved English proficiency exam with a sufficient score as defined by the Admissions Department. As an alternative to passing an English proficiency test (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo), students may instead enter the Pathway Program and successfully complete the Pathway requirements to gain admission to an undergraduate or graduate degree without passing an English proficiency test.
Courses Required to Complete the IEP
Students must take all 3 courses provided for the levels they need to complete. Students do not need to complete levels lower than their incoming placement.
