PY 600 - History and Systems

This course provides an overview of the history and systems of psychology; identifying the field’s achievements and flaws alongside today’s emerging findings. Students learn to think critically about psychology and gain a
better understanding of how the field has advanced as it relates to culture, economics, current events, and politics. Students will learn about prominent figures, evolutions, and ideas that have cultivated Psychology’s history, with an emphasis on theory, methods, the historical care of Americas’ mentally ill, the evolution of mental asylums, and the growth of American psychiatry. This course will also cover the lives and achievements of the first generation of female psychologists in an attempt to navigate psychology’s history through their eyes.
