ED 715E - Foundations of Language and Literacy Development and Acquisition for Students with Dyslexia and Other Learning Disabilities

This is the first course requirement for the Dyslexia Endorsement and is a prerequisite of the other courses included in completing this endorsement. This course covers characteristics of individuals with dyslexia and other learning disabilities across the lifespan. This class will provide candidates with knowledge of theory and research in how children learn and acquire reading and writing skills. Research, structured literacy components, and evidence-based practices will constitute the substance of this course. Included in this overview, will be essential components for successful language and literacy development, including phonology,
orthography, semantics, syntax, and discourse. Historical perspectives and contemporary issues surrounding dyslexia and related disabilities will also be addressed.
