Dr. Tracey Brent-Chessum, Chair

Disciplines and Degrees Offered  Please see a detailed list at the end of this section of majors and courses offered by the Department of Theatre.

Purpose  The goal of the theatre program is to graduates students who, concurrently & holistically:

  1. Use their grounding in history, analysis, and aesthetics to inform their artistic choices.
  2. Demonstrate and model the skills necessary for excellent theatrical production.
  3. Are both independent and collaborative creators.
  4. Articulate the value of theater, as an artform and in society.

Through both academic classroom training and valuable practical experience in all aspects of production, the theatre major prepares students for professional work in theatre, film, and other collaborative careers.  All theatre majors require an interview, audition or portfolio review for admission into the program.

Major productions are staged as part of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance, a one-of-a-kind, nationally-recognized partnership between Brenau University and the University of North Georgia.  The partnership functions as one collaborative department, sharing faculty and resources to the benefit of the students.  Performances take place at Pearce Auditorium, the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts on the Historic Brenau Gainesville campus and the Ed Cabell Theatre at the University of North Georgia. Laboratory productions are staged in Brenau’s Black Box Theatre, the Brenau Theatre on the Square, and at the University of North Georgia. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to off-campus facilities.

Theatre majors are required to participate in the mainstage productions. Students must maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA to retain eligibility for participation in the production program.
