Middle Grades Education (M.A.T.)

The M.A.T. in Middle Grades Education is an initial certification program designed for candidates who have completed a baccalaureate degree. In addition to all the course requirements, students must pass the Teaching Field Content Exams for academic content area (GACE) prior to placement with a school system to student teach.

Concentration Requirements
The major in middle grades education has two areas of content concentration with up to 16 semester hours of content from each of the two disciplines. The primary and secondary concentrations may be selected from language arts, mathematics, reading, science or social studies. Students may not choose Language Arts and Reading. Mathematics (15 hours)

Geometry Credits / Units: 3 Algebra Credits / Units: 3 Statistics Credits / Units: 3 Math Elective Credits / Units: 3 § Contains Field Experience.
Science (16-19 hours)
One of the science electives must be a four semester hour lab science. - PS 505 - Science for Teachers §
Earth and Space Science Credits / Units: 3-4 Physical Science Credits / Units: 3-4 Life Science Elective Credits / Units: 3-4 Science Elective Credits / Units: 3-4 § Contains Field Experience.
Social Studies (15 hours)
Clinical Experience
A total of 9-12 hours of clinical experience is required. Choose from student teaching (9 hours) for one semester or the internship experience (12 hours) over several semesters.
Field Experience: Will have field experience in each of the following grade levels: 4-5, 6-7 and 8 in designated courses.

Total Graduate Semester Hours Required for Degree: 60 - 73
The difference in hours is dependent on which concentrations and clinical experience the student chooses. There can be undergraduate courses applied toward concentration (content) requirements. Undergraduate courses applied toward content requirements taken elsewhere than Brenau are included in the total hours but will not display on the student’s transcript. |
