PA 702 - General Surgery Rotation (5) A required five-week rotation (supervised clinical practice experience, or SCPE) that takes place in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and in the operating room. The purpose of this rotation is to provide the student with SCPEs that address the fundamental principles and practice of general surgery. Under the supervision of the program-identified clinical preceptor, the student will apply knowledge and skills learned during the didactic phase to the care of actual patients as a member of an inter-professional health care team. Emphasis will be on caring for the general surgery patient and students will participate in pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care, learning to function as a member of the surgical team. Students will gain experience in learning to triage the surgical patient, to interact with patients’ families, and become more proficient at taking appropriate medical histories and performing appropriate physical examinations. They will also learn to participate in the pre- and post-operative care of the general surgery patient, as well as to appropriately function as a member of the surgical team in the operating room.
