PA 706 - Behavioral/Mental Health Rotation

(5)
A required five-week rotation (supervised clinical practice experience, or SCPE) that takes place primarily in the outpatient, but may include inpatient experiences. The purpose of this rotation is to provide the student with SCPEs that address the fundamental principles and practice of behavioral and mental health. Under the supervision of the program-identified clinical preceptor, the student will apply knowledge and skills learned during the didactic phase to the care of actual patients as a member of an interprofessional health care team. Emphasis will be on providing comprehensive behavioral and mental health care, including acute, chronic, urgent, emergent and preventive care. While on this rotation, the student will learn to perform a competent screening interview and examination of a behavioral and mental health patient, including complete mental status examination, in order to identify psychiatric symptoms and make a differential diagnosis. Students will have the opportunity to assess and manage commonly encountered psychiatric, cognitive and behavioral problems in patients of all ages, monitor medications, and develop management plans for patients following psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Prerequisite(s): PA 641, PA 642, PA 644, PA 645, PA 646, PA 647
