This course will examine the elements that contribute to developing social responsibility. Being of service is a crucial component of being socially responsible; therefore, this class will consist of one day each week in the classroom and one day each week in the field engaging in a service learning project. Students will learn the theory and research of social responsibility and develop a skill set that promotes being effective and able to manage the often stressful aspects of being socially responsible. Resources and career paths will be explored. This course is a prerequisite for all courses in the major. This course is designated as a “W” course. W courses emphasize the experience and expertise of women throughout course design and delivery. Students will identify and analyze the contributions and experiences of women. More than 50% of course activities, readings, and assessments emphasize and explore female experience, perspective, or expertise.
