(3)
In this course students will explore the ways in which diversity impacts human experience. Diverse social identities can include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, and religion. We will explore these identities and how they can be fluid and intersectional. We will examine the diverse experiences of individuals families and systems. This includes discussion of how systems, at the level of community and society, can initiate or maintain oppression; contributing to poor outcomes. Multicultural competence in the delivery of mental health services will be examined with particular focus on developing awareness of student’s own identity/biases. Students will learn about advocacy and other strategies for intervention at the systems level. Finally, students will learn to identify strengths in clinical work that help build resilience in a complex and changing world.
