PY 832 - Advanced Play Therapy (3) The purpose of this course is to introduce the function of play and play therapy in the counselling setting. Major play therapy theories, various techniques, and salient issues working with minors, adults, and families will be emphasized. A review of topics such as the influence of childhood development, culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, spirituality, and complexities of childhood psychopathology will be highlighted. Filial therapy, art therapy other adjunctive therapy will be examined. Students will be introduced to ethical guidelines when working within this model. The class will consist of readings, reflections, discussions, experiential activities, and a research paper examining a critical aspect of child development/play therapy, i.e. “Touch in play therapy”, “Resistant parent”, “Aggressive play in the playroom”.
